Das Mittelelbe-Saale-Gebiet war zwischen 4200 und 2800 v. Chr. von verschiedenen frühbäuerlichen Kulturen besiedelt. Um die kulturelle Vielfalt und die Entwicklung der Tiernutzung zu erfassen, wurden die Faunenreste der zwei bedeutenden Fundplätze Wallendorf » Hutberg « und Salzmünde » Schiepzig « untersucht und mit 29 veröffentlichten Fundorten verglichen. Insgesamt wurden mehr als 33.000 Tierreste anhand archäozoologischer Methoden statistisch ausgewertet. Es zeigt sich, dass die Nahrungsmittelproduktion hauptsächlich auf der Viehzucht basierte und dass bestimmte Fundplätze eine Spezialisierung bei genutzten Tierarten und Tierprodukten aufwiesen. Darüber hinaus belegen symbolische Praktiken die besondere Wertschätzung bestimmter Tiere und somit eine einzigartige Beziehung zu den Menschen.
